I've played since 2008, and I love old Maple. Everything about it makes me nostalgic, the music, the maps, even the old UI.
Looking for Dev partners!!!! I have set up a clean v62 Maplestory private server that I intend to grow into an amazing project. I am looking for a tiny group of people to assist in development and co-owning. PM if interested, lets make it happen!
Some people even say they miss the grind, that modern Maple is 'too easy'. And that is where I think you are wrong. If anything, old maple is too hard! It's a completely different experience and I had forgotten just how extremely slow it was to level up and make progress in it. It's frustrating to spend 3 hours grinding at slimes and green mushrooms you can hardly kill just to get from level 20-23. There's not that many features, either. In fact, visiting servers like this is more of a walk down memory lane than it is a fun game you can really get into.
Modern MapleStory, on the other hand, has a metric fuckton of things to do, various different playstyles, and of course, a quicker, more balanced EXP system. And although I do enjoy playing both, logging in to train on old Maple feels more like a chore; play for 5 hours to get from lvl 80-81, and I might not even get there because I could get burnt-out in between. Whereas on new Maple, I'm pretty much guaranteed to progress somewhere, even it's in making money or getting equips if not leveling up a few times.
And about the whole 'old maple had a better community' shtick, summed it up perfectly: 'The only reason socializing was such a major part of the game is because, well, what the fuck else are you going to do while grinding on slimes and snails for hours on end with a dozen-odd people in the same map?' Again, to the people who complain new Maple is too easy; it isn't, it's just a more balanced and less boring version of old Maple. I hope this doesn't piss anybody off, I love both versions, this is just my reasons for liking new MapleStory more, and why I find a lot of the hate toward the modern version corrupted; because it's tainted by nostalgia. Edit: changed some words. The reason a lot of people romanticize old maple is simply due to the fact that most of us were playing it as little kids, we did not know any better, back then an orange mushroom was so magical to us, that this is all we needed.

Also kids are for more sociable, hence why back then you made so many connections with people, but nowadays, you can definitely socialize as much as you want, but most of us prefer doing our own thing. Do i miss the social aspect of the game back then? Yes, but i am aware that we, the player base of today, are in fault. Do i miss having no content and progressing very slow? And that is the primary reason why people need to stop being so hung up on the notion of every problem with the game magically being fixed, a magical massive influx of new and old players happening, should Nexon revert the game back to an old version. The only reason people look back so fondly on the old days is because it was all new and interesting back then, and the only reason socializing was such a major part of the game is because, well, what the fuck else are you going to do while grinding on slimes and snails for hours on end with a dozen-odd people in the same map? And the only reason you had so many people in one map is because that was the most viable spot for grinding at that point.
Yes, I'm talking about HHG1. It was then as it is now, people congregate to the best grinding maps. And it's as you said, kids tend to be more sociable, kids are more prone to striking up conversation with random passerby. Now though, we've most all grown up and we mostly stick to our existing circles of friends for socializing most of the time. When you look past the nostalgia, because that's all it is, pre-bb was pretty stale and lackluster. All you had was grinding and maybe Zakum. But that's a big maybe, for most people you only had grinding.
There was, let's be honest, absolutely nothing else to do. The 'community' complaint comes up with every old game. Everybody romanticizes how the 'community' used to be, and then blames the game/developers for 'ruining' it with QOL improvements, expansions, etc. It seriously comes up in every single online multiplayer game that persists and is updated for years. Those who complain forget that a game can change while the community can stay constant.
Community becoming worse or less emphasized is due to one thing: the community becoming worse or placing less value ON community. We are the community, and the fault of us being bad is, not surprisingly, squarely on us. Universally, across every game. This is a big one for me. As someone who played MMOs more alone than with friends I already knew, I could see what the community at large was more easily.
It was garbage in almost all games where people are nostalgic about it. Like with runescape, you can't compare how friendly on average people are in modern vs old school. Old school community is just a step above league. In general, old school or old school private servers of mmos tend to bring back the worst parts of a game's community that had left long ago.
It's not 100% nostalgia. Back then the grind was so hard that basically the top 50 people in each server knew and respected one another. All the lower level people had someone to look up to or someone they wanted to be like. Nowadays things are so fast nobody knows who's who or what's what.

You try to make friends with the person next to you and it turns out they do 50mil lines while you do 5mil lines and as a result there's nothing you can do together that won't make you feel useless. I think people miss having level be #1 and equipment #2. It's 2017, who has time for that anymore?
The positives are overwhelmingly in favor of modern maple if you look at everything objectively. Also, bring back 30man boss runs for blackmage please. Heck, I think pap even had a 10 man limit back in the day.
Alright, I'm back, and with a bang! These are all my hacks for private servers! They are very very useful, such as (only in v62), packet editing for some item dupes, and so much more! Note, I did take out some packets so the public couldn't leech and whatnot. Some are just harmful and you don't want everyone going around DCing people and servers, and item duping and meso duping all the time, that'll either just end up with all the noobs being hackers and getting some localhost builders to autoban any form of item/meso dupe, which would be terrible.
Also, there are many trainers and.CTs in my hack folders. Anyways, here's my collection of MapleStory v62 hacks!
You must be and to see this link. And my collection of MapleStory v75 hacks! You must be and to see this link. I hope you enjoy all these amazing hacks! Thank and/or rep me if I helped Blood.
